Charlene began dancing at the age of five in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, doing tap, ballet, cheer, and hula. Highlighted roles with New West include the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella, the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, the Dew Drop Fairy, Spanish Chocolate, Dancing Doll, and Merliton in the Nutcracker, and Odile, the Black Swan in Swan Lake.

Charlene was a member of the Varsity cheerleading squad in high school and earned the UCA (United Cheerleader’s Association) title “All-Star.” In college, she was a member of the California State University San Marcos Women’s Dance team in its first year. In 2008, Charlene performed at Copley Symphony Hall with California Ballet Company and the San Diego Symphony for their Holiday Pops Concert in the Nutcracker roles of “Chinese Tea,” and the “Waltz of the Flowers.” Charlene currently dances with Del Mar Ballet in San Diego under the direction of Marie Arts.

Charlene earned her B.A. in Criminology in 2006 and her M.A. in Sociology in 2008 from California State University San Marcos. She has almost a decade of experience working with and teaching infants, children ages 2-15, and adults in both the dance and cheer setting and preschool setting, with units in Child Development. She also  has a 4 year old son.

We are in search for experienced dancers that want to expand their knowledge of dance through performances.

At each practice, students will be exposed to ballet or jazz for warm up. They will learn different dance routines of a variety of styles including lyrical, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, and character. Conditioning and flexibility training will be provided. The mission of the Youth Arts Academy Dance Team is to provide dancers with a positive athletic experience. Team members will form strong friendship and improve their dancing; all while learning to become a valuable team member. Dance performances will be determined when the middle school sport schedule comes out.
