About Rock Band
The YAA Rock Band program prepares students to play various music styles in a group environment with their peers. They learn everything needed to be part of a successful performing group including foundational music instruction and technique, communication and rehearsal etiquette, music history, recording studio instruction, and preparation needed for live performance. Bands perform cover songs and compose original music. Each band is formed based on age, instruments played, music style, and schedule and instructor preference. We put great care into matching kids who will work well together to ensure a smooth and enriching experience.

Registration in Fall Rock Band includes a weekly rehearsal session with the bandmates and a YAA instructor and an end of program recording session. Performance opportunities within the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito and at other community music venues and events may be possible if deemed safe. All YAA students receive access to other YAA programs such as private lessons, master classes, jam sessions, free tickets to area music and performing arts opportunities. Students enrolled in Fall Rock Band will receive priority enrollment in the Spring Rock Band Program. Rock Bands receive the opportunity to perform at COMMOTION, the annual fundraiser for the Youth Arts Academy.
Students are required to practice 15-20 minutes each day on their own and listen to as much live and recorded music in the style of their band as possible. Due to the small collaborative nature of the rock band program, students are expected to focus on constructive communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution. Private lessons at YAA in addition to Rock Band are highly recommended, especially for beginning musicians.
Safety & Accessibility
At this time, rock band rehearsals will be in-person and take place inside the Polster branch of the Boys and Girls Clubs, either in the Youth Arts Academy Back Room of the Polster Boys and Girls Clubs Activity room.
The safety of students and staff is of utmost priority especially in this current season of COVID. The Youth Arts Academy will provide each family enrolling in Rock Band with the Safe Reopening Plan which outlines safety protocols for social distancing, personal protection & hygiene, and sanitation & cleanliness. All students will be required to sign a COVID waiver in order to participate in on-site programs at the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Dieguito. All students and staff will participate in daily health screenings, wear personal protection equipment, and will obey strict social distancing and hygiene protocol. All protocols, policies, and procedures are derived from guidelines and mandates from the proper health, music education, and government agencies.
