About Rock Band

The YAA Rock Band program prepares students to play various music styles in a group environment with their peers. They learn everything needed to be part of a successful performing group including foundational music instruction and technique, communication and rehearsal etiquette, music history, recording studio instruction, and preparation needed for live performance. Bands perform cover songs and compose original music. Each band is formed based on age, instruments played, music style, and schedule and instructor preference. We put great care into matching kids who will work well together to ensure a smooth and enriching experience.

Registration in Fall Rock Band includes a weekly rehearsal session with the band mates and a YAA instructor and an end of program recording sessions. Performance opportunities within the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Dieguito and at other community music venues and events may be possible. All YAA students receive access to other YAA programs such as private lessons, master classes, jam sessions, free tickets to area music and performing arts opportunities. Rock Bands receive the opportunity to perform at COMMOTION, the annual fundraiser for the Youth Arts Academy, tentatively scheduled for the end of May, 2023.

Requirements
Students are required to practice 15-20 minutes each day on their own and listen to as much live and recorded music in the style of their band as possible. Due to the small collaborative nature of the rock band program, students are expected to focus on constructive communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution. Private lessons at YAA in addition to Rock Band are highly recommended, especially for beginning musicians.

Safety & Accessibility
Rock band rehearsals will be in-person and take place in the Youth Arts Academy Back Room.

The safety of our students and staff are of utmost priority especially in this current season of COVID. The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito and the Youth Arts Academy will align our COVID-19 policies and guidelines with San Diego County’s guidelines for schools and childcare. Masks are no longer a requirement for employees, program participants or patrons inside any of our facilities. Masks are encouraged when county COVID-19 transmission rates are high but the choice to mask indoors will remain optional. We will continue to be supportive of participants, patrons, and employees regardless of their masking choice.
